On “Tiger” (Lion) Heads, the date is usually at lower right in small numbers and close to the head.

1288 = 1871

1289 = 1872

1290 = 1873

1291 = 1874

Early cancellations:

Peshawar – red smear

Kabul -  حہ pen mark that looks like this with a straight tail

Tashkurghan – pen symbols

Word mahsul (tax) محصول  torn or cut from lower left of stamp

Words talaf kardan تلف كردن (spoiled)  in manuscript

Word battal or batila (cancelled) بطال   in squared diamond in different colors. Possibly orange-red used at Peshawar, purple at Kandahar and blue at Mazar-i-Sharif (Major Adrian Hopkins) Or, color of cancel may indicate postal function.
